The Conservative party does not have the most reliable political record on voting for LGBT rights. And Boris Johnsons 1998 "bum boy" remarks have haunted him throughout this campaign to this week’s vote.So on Friday morning many LGBT people, though far from all, will have woken up with a sense of dread.
They may have woken with this fear even though they may know, our new Prime Minister was a supporter of David Cameron's drive for same-sex marriage, and has even defied the Tory whip to vote for other LGBT rights. But they’ll also know, his party will always be known for having more Conservative MPs vote against their own same-sex marriage bill, than for it.
Indeed, this legislation played a key part in the story for not only Friday’s result, but the whole Brexit debate. As the BBC documentary The Cameron Years detailed, this was a significant reason the Brexit referendum even happened. Read more via Forbes
